Every year, more than a million Indian engineering graduates appear for GATE — and a large proportion of them go on to apply for PSU jobs through GATE scores. Both processes require you to state a percentage equivalent of your CGPA. Using the wrong conversion formula at this stage can have serious consequences: disqualification from eligibility screening, document mismatch during verification, or offer withdrawal after selection.
GATE Eligibility: The Percentage Requirement
GATE 2026 eligibility: Candidates must hold or be appearing in the final year of a qualifying degree (B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc. Engineering/B.Arch) with a minimum of 65% marks or 6.75 CGPA on a 10-point scale for General/OBC candidates. SC/ST/PwD candidates need 55% or 5.75 CGPA.
This dual specification — percentage or CGPA — is important. GATE officially recognises both. If your university uses CGPA, you can state your CGPA directly on the application. However, if you choose to state a percentage, it must match your university's official conversion formula.
The Right CGPA to State for GATE Eligibility
The minimum CGPA required for GATE eligibility (General category) is 6.75 CGPA. But this number assumes a simple 10x equivalence — and as we have seen, that does not hold for all universities. Here is what each major university type needs:
| University | Minimum % Required | Minimum CGPA Required | Formula |
|---|---|---|---|
| IITs (except Madras) | 65% | 6.50 CGPA | CGPA × 10 |
| IIT Madras | 65% | 6.84 CGPA | CGPA × 9.5 |
| NITs (except NITK) | 65% | 6.50 CGPA | CGPA × 10 |
| NIT Surathkal | 65% | 6.84 CGPA | CGPA × 9.5 |
| VTU | 65% | 7.25 CGPA | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 |
| Anna University | 65% | 7.25 CGPA | (CGPA × 10) − 7.5 |
| Mumbai University | 65% | 7.00 CGPA | (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 |
| AKTU / UPTU | 65% | 6.84 CGPA | CGPA × 9.5 |
| Delhi University | 65% | 6.84 CGPA | CGPA × 9.5 |
Notice that VTU and Anna University students need a CGPA of 7.25 to meet the 65% GATE threshold, while IIT/NIT students using the standard 10x formula only need 6.50. This discrepancy catches many students off guard.
PSU Recruitment via GATE: Percentage Cutoffs
PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) that recruit through GATE scores set their own academic eligibility criteria, typically stated as a minimum percentage in the qualifying degree. Here are the commonly observed requirements:
| PSU | Typical Minimum % | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| BHEL | 65% | General; 55% for SC/ST |
| ONGC | 60% | First class; exact cutoff varies by batch |
| IOCL | 65% | General; 55% for SC/ST/PwD |
| NTPC | 65% | General; 55% for SC/ST |
| GAIL | 65% | General; 55% for SC/ST/PwD |
| HAL | 60% | General category |
| BPCL | 65% | General; 55% for SC/ST |
| HPCL | 65% | General; 55% for SC/ST |
| MECON | 60% | Varies; check current notification |
| SAIL | 65% | General; SC/ST 55% |
| Power Grid | 65% | General; 55% for SC/ST |
Note: PSU cutoffs change with each recruitment cycle. Always verify with the official recruitment notification before applying.
How to Fill the Percentage Column in PSU Applications
PSU application portals (Naukri government portals, PSU-specific portals) typically have a field for "Percentage in qualifying degree." Follow these steps:
- Identify your university's official conversion formula from the table above or from your university's academic regulations.
- Calculate your percentage using the correct formula.
- Enter the resulting figure — do not round up to clear a cutoff.
- If asked to specify CGPA and percentage separately, fill both fields with consistent figures.
- Keep a printed copy of your university's academic regulations page handy for document verification.
What If Your University Isn't Listed?
If you studied at a smaller university not listed in most reference guides, check your official marksheet. Many universities now print the percentage equivalent alongside the CGPA. If not, refer to your university's official website under "Academic Regulations" or "Examination Norms." The conversion formula is almost always available there. As a fallback, CGPA × 10 is the UGC default that many universities use unless they have specified otherwise.
M.Tech Admissions Through GATE
If you are using your GATE score for M.Tech admissions at IITs or NITs, the percentage or CGPA requirement for admission eligibility is the same as for GATE itself (65% or 6.75 CGPA for General). The rules above apply. Additionally, for IIT admissions, a low percentage in your qualifying degree will affect your application even if your GATE score is high — IIT admissions committees look at both.
